T es de Tortuga {31 Days of ABCs}

31 Days of ABCs - October 2013
I'm participating in 31 Days of ABCs (brought to you by All Done Monkey) with the letter T es de Tortuga (T is for Turtle).

Last month we made apples from an egg carton and I thought that would be a fun way to make little turtles.  This time I decided to cut out the little shells before we painted, rather than paint then cut, like we did with the apples.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods.  If you have a tot who isn't a very patient painter then you will end up with more possible turtles by painting the whole egg carton first (Chiquita was done after 3 turtle when we did one by one).  However, cutting then painting made the finished turtles cleaner around the edges.

After the shells were painted we glued a big letter T on the top of each and underneath glued on a head and four legs.  Some got a little extra glitter treatment - who doesn't like glitter?

Once they were dry we played a little rhyming game I made up to teach 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc in Spanish.

Here's the poem:

Cinco tortugas flotaron en un lago,
Paso una mosca y el primero se lo tragó.

I had the five turtles lined up on some blue paper (for the lake) and little bits of black pipe cleaner for the flies.  When the 1st eats the fly I lifted it up and put the "fly" under it.  We repeated this same verse, just changing "primero" for segundo = 2nd, tercero = 3rd, quarto = 4th, and quinto = 5th so that all the turtles got a chance to eat.  We did it again with Chiquita chanting along and making the turtles eat the flies (definitely her favorite part).

  1. What a cute craft! And thanks for the tip - I know my son would fall into the "impatient crafter" category, so that's good to know!

  2. I like that you made up a rhyme and an activity to go along with the turtle craft. So fun!
