Read Around the World: El Secreto de La LLama

 Part of Chiquita's cultural heritage comes from Peru, so I was excited to find this traditional legend at our local library!  We checked out the Spanish version, but it's also available in English.  It is the Andean flood legend and in this version the llama is the one who leads the man and all the animals to safety on the top of a high peak when Mamacocha (the ocean) floods the earth.  

It was fairly heavy text, so I would recommend this more for pre-schoolers and older, though if you're a good storyteller you can paraphrase the story for toddlers and enjoy the beautiful pictures.  There's also lines that repeat that are great to have kids repeat with you as you tell the story.  I've found that it's a great way to keep kids involved in the book and improve their language skills.  It was fun to see all the Andean animals.
