Book Review: 2 Kurious Kids Mexico

*I received a copy if this book for review purposes.  All opinions are my own.*

I'm always excited to introduce Chiquita to new books. 2 Kurious Kids is a series about a sister and brother going on imaginary journeys around the world, learning about cultural and language.  We got their second adventure where they visit Mexico.

What I liked about the book:
  • Story is simple for beginning readers.
  • Pronunciation guide of Spanish vocab is helpful for language learners and is on each page next to the word, rather than in the back where some people wouldn't see it.
  • Even though they're "journeying" to a foreign country, the story focuses on things familiar to kids, like school, sports and food, so that it's easy for kids to compare and contrast to their own lives and see lots of similarities rather than focusing on differences.

What I didn't like:
  • I wish the vocabulary was integrated into the story.  It's a little difficult, particularly for storytellers who don't speak the language, to give them context.  I just made up little sentences to tell her about all the things in each picture, but I speak Spanish!

Overall it was a fresh way to introduce kids to a foreign country and language.  Chiquita has loved it, asking me to read it almost every day for a few weeks.  I'm really interested to read the other books in her series.
